We’ve all wished we were a different shape, size or height at one point or another… well at least I have! Some people need to train very little to get the physique some have to train for months for. But have you ever thought that perhaps your body type is pre-determined and, no matter how much you diet or exercise, you might be naturally bigger or smaller in some areas than others?
Well, if you haven’t then think again! Our body type influences how we respond to certain diets or training plans, so what works for one person may not work for another. You need to find the one best suited for you, and to do that you first need to know which body type you have.
There are 3 main body types and I will briefly run through what they mean so that you can make a decision regarding your own body type:
Ectomorph’s are lean and delicately-framed – often long-limbed with a narrow body. This body type is typical of a marathon runner and it can be hard to pack on muscle even after hours and hours in the gym. Ectomorph’s also tend to find it hard to gain weight due to a fast metabolism.
Mesomorph’s have a naturally athletic physique due to a high metabolism and responsive muscle cells – this body type is the best one for bodybuilding. This is the body type that most people dream of (or maybe that’s just me). If they eat everything in moderation and train regularly, mesomorph’s will look great. However, it is important for mesomorph’s to not take their body type for granted (which often happens) as this can lead to poor workouts and diets.
Endomorph’s are usually short and stocky – they store body fat very easily and find it difficult to shift weight. However, they tend to have strong muscles, particularly in the legs. This tends to be the hardest body type to have in terms of getting lean and and managing your weight. Therefore, HIIT exercises are really effective for endomorph’s due to the ability to burn fat for hours after finishing your exercise.
If you still can’t decide which body type you are, it might be because you are a combination of two of them – these combinations tend to be ectomorph/mesomorph or mesomorph/endomorph. Once you have identified your body type, you will be able to train and eat in the ways which will give you the best results.
In my next post I will discuss what kinds of diets are best for each body type, so make sure you have a read!
