When hunger strikes there is nothing worse than not having any quick and easy snacks to turn to. Many people end up reaching for the cookie jar for a quick sugar-fix and live to regret it 20 minutes later. That's why I want to share with you my favourite go-to snacks to curb any cravings and keep my diet on track (even when I'm hangry).
The important thing to remember is that your snack should be loaded with protein and fat, rather than with sugar. This will not only keep you full for much longer but it will also prevent your blood sugar levels from spiking, leaving you to feel even worse afterwards. If you do enjoy snacking on fruit, make sure it is whole fruit (not dried or juiced) and pair it a healthy source of fat - this will slow the absorption of glucose into your blood stream (and hence prevent a huge insulin spike) as well as help your body absorb the nutrients from the fruit.
Did you know: Vitamins A, D, E and K can only be absorbed in the presence of fat!
So, as promised, here are my 5 top healthy snacks:
Sprinkle two slices of halloumi with turmeric and grill until golden - this is definitely number one on my list!
Small handful of mixed nuts
Go easily on the portion size here - although nuts are highly nutritious, at the end of the day they still high in calories so if weight loss is your goal then go easy on the nuts. I roast my own nuts at home in coconut oil and spices - yum!
Eggs are an excellent source of fat and protein, as well as being packed full of essential nutrients. Pair it with a slice of ham for an extra boost, or sprinkle it with chilli flakes for a fiery hit.
This is the perfect snack to keep in the freezer for when cravings hit! Simply heat 1/4 cup coconut oil, 1/4 cup cacao powder, 2 tablespoons nut butter and 1 tablespoon of rice malt syrup in a pan and stir until combined. Then divide into moulds and freeze until set.
Veggie sticks with guacamole/hummus
Carrots, celery, capsicum.. the choice is yours! My favourite is carrot sticks with homemade guacamole - I add a squeeze of fresh lime, chilli flakes and salt/pepper to my avocado. If you've never made your own hummus before then I definitely recommend giving it a go - it's very quick and easy! If you are buying the store bought stuff, try and find a brand with no preservatives or vegetable oils.
So next time you are about to reach for that packet of maltesers, stop and think for just a minute. Are you actually hungry or are you just bored? Maybe you are thirsty? Have a glass of water, wait 20 minutes and if you are still hungry then try one of these snack ideas instead!
