For anyone that knows me you'll know that my favourite thing to do is lift heavy weights. So when I got drawn into going to my first ever F45 class (thanks Zanna) I was pretty damn nervous. Cardio and circuits? For 45 minutes? Uh ohhhhh... this sounded like something that would make me throw up! Now don't get me wrong, I'm definitely not unfit, but I try to limit my cardio to things that I can control e.g. running/sprinting. So an F45 class was definitely pushing myself outside of my comfort zone and I thought it'd be a good challenge.
When I turned up I was scared to say the least but the trainers and other members are so welcoming and friendly that it puts you at ease straight away (and Zanna was great too - she reassured me I'd be fine). The Athletica class we did was in tabata style (20 secs work: 10 secs rest) which is an absolute KILLER - 10 seconds doesn't even feel like a rest... by the time you've stopped the exercise and relaxed your body you have to start all over again!
But did I enjoy it? Hell yeaaaahhhh. It was by a mile the most fun class I've ever done. There is a real 'team-spirit' vibe with everyone motivating each other whilst having a laugh along the way. I tried exercises I never even knew existed and worked up a sweat like you couldn't even believe. The 45 minutes passed so quickly and by the end I knew straight away I was going to be back for more.
I'm now a true F45 addict. If I was rich I would go more than I do but alas, I'm not, so I only go once a week. I go to the cardio-based classes as opposed to the resistance-based ones because I am already lifting weights 4 times a week in the gym. So I use it as my form of HIIT cardio which means I no longer have to sprint facing a wall in the gym (which no one can call 'fun'). Every single week I look forward to the class and every single week it pushes me to my limit.
The downside? It's pricey. At $30 a class (or £20 in London) it does quickly eat away at the bank balance. But I can honestly say, hand on heart, that it is SO worth it. For any fitness level from beginner to elite - it is suitable for all because you can push yourself as little or as hard as you like.
If you haven't tried it out yet... what are you waiting for?! And if you have let me know all about it in the comments below!
