5 reasons why I love exercise (and why you should too)
Why are you so obsessed with the gym? Why don't you just take a week off? Why do you wake up so early to go to the gym instead of just sleeping?
These are just a few of the questions I get asked all the time. And do you know what they all have in common? They all ASSUME that exercise or going to the gym is not enjoyable. They ASSUME that I do it even though I don't want to. This is where they're wrong.
I will hold my hands up and admit that when I first started going to the gym it was because I wanted to change, not because I loved it. I wanted to change the way I looked. I wanted to change my body. And I wanted to feel confident. Most people assume that I am a naturally confident person because I am loud and outgoing but what many don't realise is that I have only recently (in the last year or so) started having true self-confidence - the belief that I am good enough the way I am, no matter what other people say.
So why do I enjoy going to the gym every morning at 6am? There's a few reasons....
1) Makes me feel confident
This is definitely the first and most important point. Exercise makes me feel confident and energised. When I go to the gym first thing in the morning I feel so much better for the rest of the day. I walk with my head held high and with the belief that if I can get up early to go to the gym, I can handle anything else life might throw at me. Yes, it sounds sad but it's true.
2) Look good naked
I think anyone who tries to claim this isn't a reason is probably telling you a fib. Everyone wants to look good naked. So yes, this is part of the reason why I love exercise.
Exercise is undeniably good for you. It improves cardiovascular health, it helps keep your body at a healthy weight which means you are less likely to develop obesity, type-2 diabetes and other diseases associated with excessive weight gain. But it is also good for your mental health. It can help with depression, stress and anxiety. Basically, exercise is great for you.
4) Meet new people (sports/classes)
Keeping fit and active doesn't necessarily mean you have to slave away in the gym for countless hours everyday on your own. Go to gym classes, go to fitness meet-ups, play a sport. There are so many ways to meet people through exercise! In fact, I met most of my closest friends here in Australia through fitness - either an organised event or through playing netball. Exercise is a great way to socialise with people who are interested in similar things!
5) Releases endorphins - makes me feel happy
And last but CERTAINLY not least... exercise makes me happy. Yes, sometimes I might dread setting my alarm for 5:30am. But I ALWAYS feel better afterwards, no matter what. Exercise releases endorphins which make you feel good and this is such a key reason why I love it. As I'm writing this I'm about to get up and go to a 8am Saturday morning F45 class. In reality, I would rather be in bed right now (especially after eating a huge pizza last night and now kind of feeling a bit sick). But I know how good I feel for the rest of the day after my Saturday early morning F45 class so I am going!
Do you love going to the gym? Or playing a sport? What are your reasons for loving it?! Let me know!
