So you've started on a new 'weight loss' regime - you're going to be more active, eat well and sleep more... sounds easy right?!
Unfortunately it can be very tricky to know where to start. The majority of people just want to know what to eat to lose weight without any unnecessary science jargon.
In my opinion, one of the first places to start with weight loss is with portion sizes. It's so easy to over-eat nowadays, especially with the portion sizes we get served at restaurants or fast food places (which are normally waaaaay larger than necessary)!
Calorie-counting is one obvious way to control portion sizes... weighing food, tracking macros and so on. But this method isn't for everyone. Firstly, it can be very anti-social - what if you don't know the exact weight of your food when you eat out? Secondly, it can be boring and tedious - who wants to weigh their food for the rest of their life?
Solution: find a way to control your portion size without counting calories.
And how do we do that? By using your hands. Yep, that's right. Your hands, as in those two things on the end of your arms.
This is a great place to START. It may need some tweaking here and there e.g. you might need more if you are trying to gain weight or if you feel better on a higher fat diet then you can increase your fat and reduce your carbs, but generally speaking this is a great method to use. This way you are likely to be achieving a balanced, portion-controlled diet.
And the main reason why this method of portion control is so good?
Everyone is a different size. And everyone's hands are different sizes. Your portion size might be way bigger than mine because your palm is bigger. This means every single person's portion size is unique and personalised to them. Plus, your hand is always with you... a portable portion size device!
If you are someone who consistently tracks macros then maybe try this method for a week - see how you get on. You never know, you might feel better for it.
